History of Department of Communications

The Department of Communications has many years of experience in solving technical, technological, organizational, economic and marketing problems in companies operating in these areas. Its beginnings date back to 1961, when the Department of Operation and Economics of Communications was officially established. This department was originally a part of the Department of Operations and Economics of Road and Urban Transport.

During this period, the head of the department was prof. JUDr. Jan Busak. Simultaneously with the establishment of the department and due to the lack of experts in the communications sector, the study of Operation and Economics of Communications began to develop. The development in the telecommunications sector was the factor gave rise to the specialization in the technical operation of the post office. In 1976 new specialization became part of the basic field of study Operation and Economics of Communications.

Due to the requirements of the Ministry of Communications for graduates of this department and its international recognition, it is important to note that on December 9, 1976, the original Faculty of Operation and Economics was renamed the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications. Later, the university was renamed the University of Transport and Communications. This fact was widely accepted by foreign universities, which created space for extensive cooperation between the department and abroad.

After a short interruption of activities in the years 1967 - 1970, the activities of the Department of Communications resumed its operations under the leadership of prof. Ing. Gabriela Mokošová, CSc., who headed the department until 1990. In the following period, the Department of Communications was headed by prof. RNDr. Ing. Karol Achimský, CSc. (1990-1996), prof. Ing. Jana Štofková, CSc. (1996-1999) and prof. Ing. Tatiana Čorejová, PhD. (1999-2002). In the years 2002 - 2003, the head of the department will again be prof. RNDr. Ing. Karol Achimský, CSc. and from 2003 to 2016 she was the head of the department doc. Ing. Iveta Kremeňová, Ph.D. At present, the department is headed by doc. Dr. Ing. Margita Majerčáková.

At present, the Department of Communications provides full-time and part-time education in three levels - bachelor's, engineering and doctoral. With the development of services and the building of the information society, the employment of graduates is gradually expanding.

The aim is to prepare them for the needs of management of business entities operating in the field of postal services and electronic communications with the ability to develop the use of information and communication technologies, for the needs of management at all organizational levels of these entities.
